Jordan Henderson Responds To Troy Deeney And N’Golo Kante Decisions Over Training

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has spoken about the stance taken by Watford captain Troy Deeney and Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante regarding the return to training.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has said he fully respects the decisions made by Watford striker Troy Deeney and Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante over training.

Premier League players have been back in training this week following a unanimous vote to implement phase one of the return to training protocol, although no decisions have yet been made about when Premier League football could return.

But not all players have trained, with Watford captain Deeney and Chelsea midfielder Kante opting not to train amid concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

That follows six positive tests from 748 carried out across the Premier League prior to the resumption of training, with Watford defender Adrian Mariappa the only player to have confirmed that he has tested positive, with two other members of staff at the club also testing positive.

And Henderson has said that he understands the decisions taken by some players about the return to training.

“I fully respect their opinion and their decision to do that,” the Liverpool midfielder told  Sky Sports.

“I think everybody is in a different situation with their family and at home. Ultimately, if you don’t feel comfortable or safe, you shouldn’t feel forced or pressured to come into work.

“I fully respect the lads that don’t feel comfortable as of yet, and I hope that they respect my opinion and that of the other players who have come back.

“Everybody’s situation is different but ultimately, for me, I feel very safe here at the training ground, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. My team-mates as well.

“I can only really speak for us, but I fully respect people in different situations who don’t feel comfortable.

“If any of my team-mates felt like that, I would fully support them and back them until they felt it was right to come back.”
